History of the CMCA

One of the first of its kind on the East Coast, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai's Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs (CMCA) was a federally funded HRSA Center of Excellence from 2002 through 2005. This formalized a 30-year history of pipeline programming that has introduced more than 8,000 disadvantaged youth.

In 2009, the CMCA was rewarded a three-year, $2.5 million grant to re-establish the Center of Excellence for Minority Health geared toward exposing increasing the level of diversity in the healthcare workforce. The award, made possible through a grant from the Center of Excellence Program of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), allows the CMCA to continue building on core activities in the areas of developing and nurturing: a competitive applicant pool, underrepresented minority (URM) faculty development, URM faculty and student research, cultural competency, and academic support services, as well as developing medical education and training opportunities in community-based settings.

A nationally recognized Center, the CMCA provides centrally coordinated support and programming at every level from high school and collegiate programs to medical school, residency and faculty development. CMCA has had significant success in providing a rewarding a successful experience for underrepresented minorities facing multiple barriers to access health careers. CMCA reaches out to students to provider opportunities to develop clinical excellence and engage in research. CMCA's URM faculty development program supports junior faculty and trainees by enabling them to focus on clinical and biomedical research experiences and achievements that inform local and national public policy directly impacting reduction of health care disparities among racial/ethnic minorities.
