The Mount Sinai Medical Center Adopts HIPAA-Compliant Mobile Care App Across the Enterprise

The Mount Sinai Medical Center has adopted an enterprise-grade mobile care-coordination mobile app called Cureatr, which was designed by a resident at The Mount Sinai Hospital, Joseph Mayer, MD. Mount Sinai has signed a multi-year contract to roll out the app to Mount Sinai clinicians.

The cloud-based mobile app, designed for use with iPhones, Androids, tablets and other hand-held devices, employs a special HIPAA-secure group text messaging system that improves communication between team members who coordinate care of patients with complex medical conditions.
Dr. Mayer co-founded Cureatr in 2011 with Alex Khomenko, the former Director of Engineering at 23andMe. Dr. Mayer and Mr. Khomenko now serve as Chief Executive Officer and Chief Technology Officer, respectively. Dr. Mayer acknowledged many individuals at Mount Sinai for their support, including Darrow and Achan, as well as Mark A. Callahan, MD, CEO of Mount Sinai Care, LLC (Mount Sinai’s ACO); Kumar Chatani, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer; Mark DeLaney, Vice President, Information Technology; Erin S. DuPree, MD, Chief Medical Officer; Wayne Goodman, MD, Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai; and Ronald Rieder, MD, a Professor of Psychiatry who served as Dr. Mayer’s Residency Director.

The app was pilot-tested for months by Mount Sinai clinicians in a pilot program at the hospital, and is also used at The Institute for Family Health (IFH), a Mount Sinai affiliate led by Neil Calman, MD, Co-founder, President and CEO. Because Cureatr enables both intra- and inter-institutional communication, users at affiliates such as IFH and large group practices are able to securely message Mount Sinai practitioners for referral and follow-up care.
Dr. Mayer developed the app to solve the day-to-day challenges he and his colleagues experienced while treating patients, including reaching the right care-team member at the right time and communicating with him or her effectively, and navigating the many complex day-to-day clinical workflows at a hospital such as Mount Sinai. "Outside of the electronic medical record system, physicians, nurses and other care team members have no mobile tools built specifically for their care coordination challenges," said Dr. Mayer.
Cureatr was featured at the New York Digital Health Accelerator’s first Demo Day on Wednesday, May 8 at The Times Center in New York. Cureatr was one of eight out of 250 applicant companies to receive a $300,000 grant for the development of the app. The NYDHA is run by the Partnership Fund for New York City and the New York eHealth Collaborative and was designed for growth-stage companies developing products for providers and patients in the care coordination, patient engagement, and health care analytics fields.
