K12 Program

The Mount Sinai K12 Research Career Development Program in Emergency Medicine, built upon Mount Sinai’s highly productive research infrastructure, is a vibrant research training program designed to produce individuals who succeed as independently funded researchers. The program provides talented, research-minded junior faculty physicians, nurses, and other clinicians with a strong methodological foundation in the principles of clinical, translational, and health services research, as well as a rich array of experiential research opportunities.

Each K12 Scholar is supported by an outstanding group of research, content, and career mentors drawn from our accomplished group of participating clinical, translational, and health services investigators from the following disciplines: Emergency Medicine, Cardiology, Hematology, Internal Medicine, Critical Care, Pediatrics, Preventive Medicine, Blood and Vascular Biology, Epidemiology, Anesthesiology, Genetics and Genomics, Pathology, Health Evidence and Policy, Geriatrics and Palliative Care, Pharmacology and Systems Therapeutics, Medical Toxicology, Biostatistics and Biomedical Informatics.  Mount Sinai faculty are joined by other world-class scientists from around the country to guide our Scholars in the design and conduct of research that produces new discoveries regarding disease mechanisms, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of emergency conditions.

Individual and collaborative research activities with graduated levels of independence prepare the Mount Sinai K12 Scholars to achieve success as clinician-scientists.   We believe that research is a collaborative activity most effectively practiced by multidisciplinary groups in an atmosphere that promotes scholarly inquiry and mutual respect.  Our Scholars are trained in this type of environment and taught to create it in their own research groups.

The K12 Program is situated in the Research Division of the Mount Sinai Department of Emergency Medicine and is supported by our robust research infrastructure.  The Research Division is home to a talented cadre of emergency physician investigators with a successful record of research funding.  Our faculty’s cutting-edge research and our active, transdisciplinary collaborations have resulted in Mount Sinai’s consistent ranking among the top ten academic departments of emergency medicine in the United States with respect to NIH funding.
