Department and Institute
The Department of Genetics and Genomic Sciences and the Icahn Institute for Genomics and Multiscale Biology are closely integrated, but have separate mandates.
The Department of Genetics and Genomic Sciences is a traditional medical-academic department at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai that conducts basic research, trains fellows who specialize in research or counseling, and educates the next generation of doctors and genetic counselors in cutting-edge precision medicine techniques. Additionally, the Department, as part of a major medical center, is the home to our genetic testing lab and medical genetics clinic.
The Icahn Institute focuses on deploying an interdisciplinary team to harness the best biological and computational skillsets to focus on important questions that (because they may be experimental or cross disciplines) are not amenable to typical grant funding. In disease areas such as Crohn's disease and schizophrenia where illnesses arise from multiple, complex factors, the Institute helps the Department translate basic research into clinical care.
