Mayor Bloomberg presented Tracy L. Breen, MD, a Proclamation recognizing the Mount Sinai Diabetes Center on November 17, 2010
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg issued a Proclamation recognizing The Mount Sinai Medical Center for its contributions during Diabetes Awareness Month and World Diabetes Awareness Day. Shadi Chamany, MD, Director of New York City Department of Health Diabetes Prevention and Control Program, presented the proclamation to Tracy L. Breen, MD, Clinical Director, Mount Sinai Diabetes Center and Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Bone Diseases on Wednesday, November 17th.
In his proclamation, Mayor Bloomberg noted the importance of health and well being to New York City residents, and yet 560,000 residents have diabetes and nearly sixty percent of them are African American or Latino. One of the greatest challenges the New York City Department of Health faces is how to educate residents on prevention and management of this disease.
The Mount Sinai Diabetes Center, with generous support from the Stanley Mirsky, MD, conducts multi-faceted programs designed for the Latino and African American communities. The programs include diabetes prevention activities, detection screenings, interactive learning sessions, cooking demonstrations and all sorts of workshops with the goal of teaching patients how to manage and prevent diabetes through healthy eating, exercise and medicine. Mayor Bloomberg recognized all associated with the center and thanked everyone for making such great contributions to the city of New York.
We congratulate all, particularly Dr. Breen, Brett Ives, NP, Certified Diabetes Educator, and Alenka Ravnik-List, RD, Certified Diabetes Educator, who were instrumental in making Diabetes Awareness Month a huge success.
Dr. Chamany and Dr. Breen hope to collaborate in the future, further establishing Mount Sinai as New York City's leader in diabetes prevention and management.
