Barbara Murphy, MD, Irene and Arthur M. Fishberg Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Nephrology, was recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine on November 18, 2010. She was the co-author of Outcomes of Kidney Transplantation in HIV-Infected Recipients.

This landmark paper focuses on the outcomes of kidney transplantation and immunosuppression in people infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). With improved anti-HIV drug therapy, HIV infected patients are living longer and are at a higher risk for liver and kidney failure and may need organ transplants. The study, funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, evaluated the safety and effectiveness of organ transplantation in HIV infected patients.

The Mount Sinai Medical Center was one of only 19 United States transplantation centers to participate in the study. This breakthrough study and paper should not be missed. View the full article
