Midwifery at The Mount Sinai Hospital
At The Mount Sinai Hospital, our midwifery team provides personal nurturing care specializing in reproductive health and childbirth. During pregnancy, our midwives provide care during prenatal visits, attend vaginal births, and continue to provide postpartum care after your baby is born.
The Mount Sinai Hospital midwives believe in the importance of equitable access to healthcare for our diverse multi-racial and multi-cultural communities, including LGBTQI healthcare and trauma-informed care. Our midwives strive to empower our patients to make informed decisions regarding their own healthcare.
As your partner in care, our midwives help ease the transition into parenthood. While midwives are not surgeons or specialists in high-risk obstetrics, all midwives at Mount Sinai Hospital work with our obstetricians and gynecologists in a collaborative relationship should the need for advanced care arise.
Our midwives provide:
- Prenatal care through routine appointments and monitoring
- Care during labor and birth
- Education on lactation, nutrition, reproductive health, and family planning
- Health screenings for cervical cancer, vaginal infections, and sexually transmitted infections
- Contraception including prescription of contraceptives and long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) placement
- Postpartum care, including postpartum contraception
A common misconception is that midwives only care for people who want “natural childbirth,” but midwives can also manage labor inductions when indicated and can care for birthing people who choose pain management plans such as an epidural or nitrous oxide.
