The Neuropathology division offers a fellowship position in its ACGME-accredited two-year program.
We are committed to academic excellence in clinical service, research, and education. We supplement our robust clinical neuropathology services by internationally recognized programs in brain banking and a rich network of neuroscience research.
We accept 1-2 fellows each year, giving preference to those board-eligible in anatomic/clinical pathology who have completed two to three years of anatomic pathology training. For a four-year combined anatomic pathology/neuropathology track, we are looking for applicants who are graduating from medical school. The neuropathology fellowship is offered for a full two-year commitment with strong focus on clinical training during year one and protected research time during year two.
Our program includes the annual examination of more than 1,200 surgical neuropathology specimens, over 200 neuroautopsy specimens, and active neuropathology research opportunities. The program includes specialty rotations at the Mount Sinai Neuromuscular Lab, the Department of Ophthalmology for ophthalmic pathology, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in New York, and Mount Sinai’s Alzheimer Disease Research Center (ADRC) and Manhattan HIV Brain Bank (MHBB).
Curriculum
With the supervising neuropathology attendings, fellows actively develop their diagnostic skills during sign out on the clinical neuropathology service, learn to integrate molecular neuropathology data in their reports, and lead the pathology discussion during weekly tumor board meetings where they interact with a team of interdisciplinary clinicians. Fellows also participate in brain and spinal cord removals and special peripheral nervous system dissections, attend brain cutting, neuroradiology and neurosurgery conferences, and the joint neurosurgery/neuro-oncology/neuroradiology/neuropathology tumor board. Fellows are active participants in resident education through the departments of Pathology, Neurology and Neurosurgery.
Research
There is a rich neuroscience research environment at Mount Sinai, and the division is affiliated with active basic and clinical studies across several allied departments. Research opportunities are available to fellows during both years. They include basic wet-bench research in neuroimmunology and tumor biology, computational work related to digital pathology / AI and single cell omics research in brain tumor (epi) genetics, neurodevelopment, and neurodegeneration; and clinical studies focused on next-generation diagnostics, on neurodegeneration through the ADRC and on HIV pathology through the MHBB, and on COVID-related neuropathology. We expect fellows to attend and present at annual national or international neuropathology meetings.
