Goals and Objectives

The residency program adheres to the American College of Preventive Medicine's published competencies for its program goals and objectives. A graduate of the Mount Sinai residency program in General Preventive Medicine (GPM) will able to do the following:

I. Generic Preventive Medicine Competencies

  1. Communicate to target groups and to the media in a clear and effective manner, both orally and in writing, the levels of risk from potential hazards and the rationale for selected intervention.
  2. Communicate to health professionals in a clear and effective manner, both orally and in writing, the findings and the rationale for selected interventions.
  3. Prepare and critique a proposal for program resources.
  4. Order priorities for major projects and/or programs according to definable criteria.
  5. Use computers for specific applications relevant to preventive medicine.
  6. Interpret legal and regulatory authority relating to protection and promotion of the public's health.
  7. Identify ethical, social, and cultural issues relating to policies, risks, research, and interventions in public health and preventive medicine contexts.
  8. Identify the processes by which decisions are made within an organization or agency and their points of influence.
  9. Identify and coordinate the integrated use of necessary and sufficient resources to improve the community's health.

II. Epidemiology and Biostatistics Competencies

  1. Design and conduct an epidemiologic study.
  2. Design and operate a surveillance system. Select and describe limitations of appropriate statistical analysis as applied to a particular data set.
  3. Translate epidemiologic findings into a recommendation for a specific intervention to control a public health problem.
  4. Design and operate a surveillance system.

III. Management and Administration Planning

  1. Formulate policy for a given health issue.
  2. Develop goals and objectives for a given health issue.
  3. Design an implementation plan to address goals and objectives.
  4. Conduct an evaluation and/or quality assessment based on measurable criteria (process and outcome).
  5. Manage the operation of a program or project, including human and fiscal resources.

IV. Clinical Preventive Medicine Competencies

  1. Develop, implement and refine screening programs for groups to identify risks for disease or injury and opportunities to promote wellness.
  2. Design and implement clinical preventive services for groups and individuals. Implement individual and community-based interventions to modify or eliminate identified risks for disease or injury and to promote wellness.
  3. Diagnose and manage diseases/injuries/conditions of significance within general preventive medicine and public health.

V. Occupational and Environmental Health Competencies

  1. Assess individual risk for occupational/environmental disorders using an environmental and occupational history.
  2. Identify potential occupational and environmental hazards in defined populations, and assess and respond to identifiable risks.
