Yuri Carvajal Bañados, M.D., M.P.H.
Dr. Carvajal Bañados, an expert in occupational health and ergonomy, is head of the Chilean Health Ministry’s Department of Occupational Health. He was awarded the Irving J. Selikoff Scholarship in the year 2002 to support the development of ergonomics standards to be adhered to by Chile’s National Health Services and the private sector. Dr. Carvajal Bañados’ additional research interests include manual lifting tasks, upper extremity muscular-skeletal disorders and thermal comfort in the workplace.

Chile has a long history of labor. We know since 1830, four industrialization time as less: 1830-1870, 1891-1920, 1940-1970 y 1986 to present. In all these times, surely, ergonomics questions has been requested, risk factors and regulation needs. But to the present, there aren’t a ergonomic regulation in lifting, awkward postures or noise and comfort for example. Some propositions have been developed in illumination, thermal comfort and digitations. These propositions have different juridical status.
Our proposal is the preparation of a Technical norms in Ergonomics for Chile. This Norms, without legal validity, may be used as referent by National Health Services and the Private Sector. Public Occupational Health Department is interested in develop an action in ergonomics. Near one hundred workers across the country need a rule about ergonomics for his inspections tasks. These ergonomics rule will be published and divulgated in capacitating sessions with the public health inspectors.
