Jaime Silva de Lima, Ph.D.
Dr. Jaime Lima, an expert in toxicology and biochemistry, is an Associate Professor in the University of Rio de Janeiro. He was awarded the Irving J. Selikoff Scholarship in 1996 to support the conduction of an assessment of the health of workers exposed to pesticides. Dr. Lima worked with Steven Markowitz, MD, while at Mount Sinai / Queens Colllege. Additional research interests include toxicology, occupational and environmental health and epidemiology.

Occupational Health Assessment of Organophosphorus Pesticides Exposure on Fieldworkers
This project means to determine the relationship between levels of RBC acetylcholinesterase present in a “ghost” membrane fraction, plasma cholinesterase, paraoxonase and exposure to organophosphates in a group of workers from two crop areas located at the State of Rio de Janeiro.
We will also determine biomarker exposure levels, i.e., urinary p-nitrophenol, monomethylphosphate (MMP), dimethyl phosphate (DMP), diethylphosphate (DEP), dimethylthiophosphate (DMTP), diethylthiophosphate (DETP), dimethyldithiophosphate (DMDTP), diethyldithiophosphate (DEDTP) and phenylphosphonic acid. All of these metabolites are the so called alkyl phosphates. We intend to determine the relationship between metabolite levels and degree of organophosphate exposure in order to hone in on the possible correlation between their levels and cholinesterase inhibition.
