Paula de Novaes Sarcinelli, Ph.D.

Dr. Sarcinelli, a Ph.D. in molecular biology, is an expert in occupational, and environmental toxicology, and currently is the Chief of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation’s Center of Studies on Worker’s Health and Human Ecology’s Pesticides Laboratory. In 1996, Dr. Sarcinelli was awarded the Irving J. Selikoff Scholarship to work with Mount Sinai’s Mary Wolff, PhD, on a determination of maternal and newborn cumulative levels of persistent organochloride pesticides. Her project results were published in Environmental Research this year. Her additional research interests include pesticides exposure assessment.

IJS Project Summary

Maternal and Newborn Cumulative Levels of Persistent Organochloride Pesticides

This project will determine the contamination levels of the organochloride pesticides DDT, DDE, Aldrin, Dieldrin, HCB and ?, ?, ? - HCH among non-occupationally exposed women from Rio de Janeiro and their newborn infants. We will analyze samples of maternal serum, milk and umbilical cord blood and will evaluate the determinants of these levels in the population studied. Newborn exposure will also be evaluated through the umbilical cord blood levels as well as the level of pesticide ingestion through milk.
