Geriatric Psychiatry

Our Division of Geriatric Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai contributes to multifaceted medical training and education, provides a number of research opportunities, and offers inpatient and outpatient clinical care in geriatric psychiatry.

We are fully committed to making breakthroughs in our field, and to training the next generation of geriatric psychiatrists. It is critical that we continue to make swift advances in research into the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of dementia and geriatric depression. Advances in this specialty are increasingly in demand as the population’s percentage of elderly grows and life expectancies increase. Our mission is more important than ever before—in New York, nationwide, and globally. We are leading the way in geriatric psychiatry, also known as psychogeriatrics or geropsychiatry.

While providing medical education to a wide range of healthcare trainees, we also offer diverse programs for the community. We are engaged in state-of-the-art clinical research in several psychiatric disorders. We always have a variety of research opportunities, from the laboratory to academic studies to clinical trials that eligible patients or trainees may participate in.

We run a 22-bed geriatric psychiatry service, and an outpatient clinic embedded within Geriatric Medicine. We also work closely with the Mount Sinai Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) Service, part of the Mount Sinai Brain Stimulation Center of Excellence, which provides inpatient and outpatient care.

In this division we are dedicated to clinical, educational, and research missions in the subspecialty of Geriatric Psychiatry.

One of our missions at the Mount Sinai Health System and the Icahn School of Medicine is to educate the future leaders of the medical profession, as well as the general public. In the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry, we offer numerous opportunities for trainees at all educational levels, as well as to the public at large.

Our Division offers an accredited fellowship and teaching rotations for medical students, psychiatry residents, and neurology residents. We also lead electives in inpatient and outpatient geriatric psychiatry and electroconvulsive therapy for upper-level psychiatry residents.

Research and Clinical Trials

We provide myriad opportunities to participate in laboratory, clinical, or translational research. Our goal is to fully uncover the processes of disease in this field, and to test novel therapeutics and treatment approaches. Our division is closely allied with the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC) at Mount Sinai, which examines memory-related diseases, and the Brain Stimulation Center of Excellence, which studies the treatment of psychiatric disorders with electroconvulsive therapy and deep brain stimulation. We run clinical studies to test the efficacy of experimental drugs and protocols.

Educational Workshops

Although we are best known for our formal medical training, we encourage our geriatric patients and their caregivers to learn more about disease processes and other aspects of aging. These educational workshops are run in conjunction with staff and patients from the Martha Stewart Center for Living and the ADRC.

Education for Medical/Psychiatry/Psychology Trainees

We provide several training opportunities in the Ambulatory Geriatric Psychiatry Clinic, a  Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship at the Mount Sinai Hospital,  and internships through the Division of Neuropsychological Testing for psychology students. Our research opportunities for medical students and psychiatry residents are typically at the ADRC.
