Golden Family Community Pediatrics Research Award Program

The mission of this Program is to establish an award program that provides medical students longitudinal, mentored, self-initiated projects, which target a unique question in community pediatrics. Objectives include: developing and support medical student interest in a broad array of community pediatric issues, increasing knowledge/awareness of issues related to children in the context of their families and communities, and cultivating ongoing mentorship relationships for students with mentors in community pediatrics.

Program Description

The Golden Family Community Pediatrics Award was established to acknowledge the excellent education and opportunities Katie E. Golden received while a student at MSSM. Katie Golden is now pursuing a career in Pediatrics. The Golden Family Community Pediatric award is open to all MSSM medical students. This award program is a unique partnership between the School of Medicine's Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs and the Division of General Pediatrics. Each year and contingent upon funds, at least one MSSM medical student will receive a stipend of up $3,000 to participate in a mentored service or research project in community pediatrics. Projects may be proposed for any geographic or non-geographic community. The project may either be based at The Mount Sinai Health System or can be nationally or internationally based. Projects are supported for up to 12 weeks during the academic year or summer months. Project reports of either qualitative or quantitative results will be presented at project conclusion and presentations may occur in several venues, including CMCA Journal Club, CMCA Community Health Symposium, Pediatric Research Symposium, and Medical Student Research Day. The award program will help support the submission of abstracts of medical student projects to national and international societies' annual meetings. A Steering Committee that includes faculty from the Departments of Pediatrics, Community and Preventive Medicine, Medical Education, and Health Policy will serve as members of the review and selection committee. The Steering Committee will also assist in recruiting program mentors.
