The Mount Sinai Physician Scholars PhD Program

The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is committed to training physician scientists who will be future leaders in science and medicine. We have maintained a highly successful MD/PhD program since 1972 that has grown in stature to educate students in basic science and clinical training. Although the number of MD/PhD students in the program (as well as other MD/PhD programs across the nation) has increased over the years, it is clear that promoting translational innovation and discoveries requires a greater number of individuals in the workforce with exceptional scientific and clinical knowledge. We are expanding our traditional training in science and medicine to a new MD/PhD program to train a high caliber of physician scientists by merging PhD training with clinical residency and fellowship.

This new MD/PhD program aims to capture applicants who had a later development of their interest in research or wanted to pursue PhD training after they had attained a clear clinical focus to guide their PhD thesis work better. As such, this program provides an integration of clinical training during residency/fellowship with PhD training, and offers the potential for post-residency research depending on the fellowship.
