Programs, Courses, and Events

The Institute for Medical Education (IME) at The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai has developed various programs and events to promote and recognize outstanding teaching, innovative curriculum design and educational scholarship for our medical educators. Our goal is to accelerate faculty growth through instruction of leadership and teaching skills, assistance with implementation/evaluation of effective curricula, and guidance for education research strategies. Additionally, we aim to implement global improvements in health care education through a mutual sharing of information and successes. The following are some of the key IME programs.

  • Medical Education Grand Rounds is a series of bi-weekly presentations held on alternating Wednesdays from October through April. These interactive CME-credit offering sessions are designed to inform teaching faculty, staff and students about emerging issues and highlight best practices in medical education. • Education Research Day: Created by the IME in 2003, Education Research Day is an annual event that highlights and recognizes educational scholarship and curricular innovation. It also provides a learning forum for educators and prepares authors for regional and national presentation of their scholarly work.
  • Excellence in Teaching Awards: Each year the IME recognizes exceptional faculty, trainees, and staff who embody the principles of excellence in teaching and go above and beyond their roles as educators.
  • Education Leadership Conference: One of the largest annual IME events, the Education Leadership Conference is a faculty development retreat for course directors, clerkship directors, deans and other educational leaders at The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and its affiliated institutions. This event serves as a forum for addressing challenges and sharing ideas with colleagues.
  • Faculty Development Series: This ongoing series will provide educator faculty with practical training in teaching skills, new pedagogies, assessment, education scholarship and research methodology. Faculty development programs are open to all faculty at Icahn School of Medicine and its affiliate institutions.
  • Students as Teachers: We believe that physicians and scientists are lifelong teachers of patients, trainees, and colleagues–and formal teaching skills instruction should be a part of their education. Students are invaluable teachers at The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and we hope to foster their success and professional development as educators.
  • Distinction in Medical Education (DIME): Distinction in Medical Education (DIME) recognizes those students who have taken leadership roles in medical education and have developed and implemented a scholarly project related to the field of medical education. DIME will be awarded to those unique students who have dedicated significant time to and demonstrated excellence in at least one of five areas: teaching, mentoring, education administration, curriculum development or curriculum assessment and who have taken a scholarly approach to their work in education.
  • INVEST (Investigator Education Skills Training): This innovative eight-session course for research scientists focuses on practical teaching skills, curriculum design, and evaluation techniques to enhance their growth as educators.
