Translational Oncology Track - Masters of Science in Clinical Research

The Translational Oncology (TO) track provides students with up-to-date scientific, conceptual, methodological, and practical knowledge about translational aspects of cancer research. This educational initiative is a bold innovative response to an emerging need in oncology research.

Track Directors:
Josep M. Llovet, MD
Scott L. Friedman, MD
Augusto Villanueva, MD, PhD

In this program, you will be exposed to mainstream genomic technologies currently used in translational research in oncology, with a particular focus on sequencing-based approaches. We also cover recent developments of minimally invasive biomarkers, such as liquid biopsy. A specific focus will address the role of the tumor microenvironment (e.g., immune system) in cancer monitoring and therapeutics. The TO track also provides an overview of the regulatory, methodological, and scientific pathways for drug development, including aspects related to intellectual property and commercialization.

Why Pursue This Track?

The field of TO has exploded over the past 10 years, molecular analyses of human samples have enabled major breakthroughs in the management of human malignancies. For example, the discovery of ALK fusion transcripts in lung cancer human tissues was crucial for the introduction of ALK inhibitors in clinical practice. Whether you have a medical background and/or are a seasoned wet bench researcher, or if you have just graduated from college, this master’s program will put you on the right track to pursue a career in translational research in oncology.

What Skill Set Will I Acquire?

This track will improve your understanding of the molecular pathogenesis of malignant disease, including how tumors develop, evolve, and disseminate, and how this information leads to new cancer treatment strategies. You will learn to use advanced genomic technologies to address clinically relevant problems, and understand the key steps of drug commercialization. You will hone your analytical and critical thinking skills and enjoy individualized mentorship and career development in cancer research. In essence, you will be exposed to the most recent advances in research in TO, taught by internationally renowned experts in this field. This will prepare you for leadership roles in cancer investigation.
