As a result of efforts from a team of Mount Sinai doctors and one Mount Sinai med student, risperidone, an anti-psychotic medication, has been added to the 18th World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medications.

The WHO Model List of Essential Medications list significantly influences the medications, psychotropic or otherwise, with which countries stock their public health systems. Previously the list only contained the typical antipsychotics fluphenazine, haloperidol, and chlorpromazine.

After receiving feedback from colleagues in our partner countries and observing the shortage of adequate anti-psychotics in so many places, the team from Mount Sinai, which included Dr. Craig Katz, Dr. Hiwot Woldu, Dr. Anna Rosen, and Second-Year med student Ms. Jasleen Salwan, the team submitted an application to WHO proposing the addition of risperidone.

The full list, which has been updated every two years since 1977, can be viewed here.
