Instructions for Family Hooders
The graduating students will sit in the middle rows of the auditorium at Avery Fisher Hall. Their names will be recited in alphabetical order by degree. Once a student is called, the entire row stands and lines up on the right side of the auditorium before their names are called to go up on stage. Once they stand and proceed to the right side of the auditorium, please meet them there and stand behind the student you are hooding.
Please sit on the right side of the auditorium (if facing the stage) on the aisle closest to the wall. This will ensure that once your family member stands up, you will be able to walk up behind them in a timely manner. BE SURE TO WEAR YOUR RIBBON WHICH DESIGNATES YOU AS A FAMILY HOODER. IF YOUR RIBBON IS NOT PINNED ON YOUR BLOUSE/LAPEL, WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ALLOW YOU TO HOOD YOUR FAMILY MEMBER. THE RIBBON WILL BE GIVEN TO YOU BY STUDENT WHEN THEY PICK UP THEIR REGALIA.
When their name is called and they proceed on stage, you will follow them up the stairs. The student will be carrying his or her hood. Please STAND BEHIND your graduate, place hood over their head, and proceed off the stage opposite from where you came up, then proceed to your own seat.
Please note – time is of essence. If you do not walk onto the stage with your student, you will not be able to hood him/her. The reciting of names takes place quickly and we will not be able to wait for any family member to get to the stage, so please follow along in the program and anticipate the time it will take to walk from where you are sitting to the right side of the auditorium to line up behind the family member.
You are not required to wear special dress, including academic regalia. Casual business attire is appropriate.
Please make sure you bring your tickets! You need the ticket to get into the auditorium and the blue ribbon to get onstage.
