Kidney Kids is a student group which pairs medical students with pediatric patients receiving hemodialysis treatment. Students visit with their buddy on a weekly basis, playing games and providing support while the patient receives dialysis treatment. Patients range in age from two to 19 years old. The group works in close contact with the Child Life specialist. Kidney Kids provides an opportunity to develop a one-on-one relationship with a patient, to learn about pediatrics, nephrology, and chronic illness, and to spend time with the children (and in some cases their families) during their dialysis treatment as a friend rather than as a doctor. Events include: Pediatric Career Night (co-sponsored with Pediatric Interest Group), Pediatric Dialysis panel, and birthday celebrations for each Kidney Kid.
