Alison Estabrook is Chief of the Comprehensive Breast Center, Mount Sinai-Roosevelt Hospital in New York City, and Professor of Surgery at The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She attended Barnard College, where she graduated cum laude in Biology. She obtained her Medical Degree at New York University, and then did her residency in surgery at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. Alison stayed on at Columbia and became the Chief of the Breast Surgery Service there in 1991. Her accomplishments include building a comprehensive breast service in which genetics, psychiatry, and complementary medicine are fully represented. She was also the co-founder of the Women at Risk program which offers medical care to women who are at the highest risk for the development of breast cancer because of family history, lobular carcinoma in situ, or gross cystic disease. In 1998 Alison moved her practice, and built a new Comprehensive Breast Center at St Luke's Roosevelt Hospital, where she is the Chief of Breast Surgery. She works with other physicians, and with physicans’ assistants, medical staff and volunteers. Alison began a Breast Fellowship Program in 2002. Since that time 10 Breast Fellows have graduated the St. Luke’s-Roosevelt/Beth Israel program. Alison has created support groups, a Resource Library, and a monthly free lecture series with speakers discussing topics of interest to high risk women. The Comprehensive Breast Center also offers free yoga and meditation classes as well as a weekly pool program. These programs are held at the Jewish Community Center on the upper west side of Manhattan, midway between St. Luke’s and Roosevelt Hospitals. Alison is a member of many local and national breast groups, including the New York Metropolitan Breast Cancer Group, the American Society of Breast Disease, American Society of Breast Surgeons, American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the Society of Surgical Oncology. She served on the Commission on Cancer for 10 years (1996-2006). She was also the Chairman of the Science Advisory Council at Barnard College from 2002 to 2006, and, in 2009, was elected to the Barnard Board of Trustees. Alison’s research interests include serum markers for breast cancer, ductal carcinoma in situ, sentinel node biopsy, and the genetics of breast cancer.
