Biography
Dr. David Yankelevitz is a Professor of Radiology and a Director of the Lung Biopsy Service at the Mount Sinai Medical Center.
Dr. Yankelevitz is an experienced thoracic radiologist with a focus on fine needle aspirations (FNAs) of lung lesions that is one of the largest FNA practices in the United States.
His main academic interest is in the area of diagnosis of early lung cancer. He was one of the initiators of the International Early Lung Cancer Action Program (I-ELCAP) lung screening study, which now has enrolled over 50,000 people in eight countries worldwide.
Dr. Yankelevitz has also been part of a team that develops software for diagnostic purposes, including techniques for rapid assessment of pulmonary lesion volumes scanned by CT on multiple dates. This approach is now becoming a standard approach in the workup of lung lesions.
He has been Principal Investigator on 4 NCI grants related to evaluation of lung nodules and evaluation of early lung cancer. He has been an author of over 200 books and chapters. He has trained 14 research fellows in Thoracic imaging.
Dr. Yankelevitz graduated from Downstate Medical Center in 1981. He went on to complete residencies in Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, and subsequently held a fellowship in Thoracic Imaging at The New York Presbyterian Hospital.
Before joining Mount Sinai, he practiced at Weill Cornell Medical College.
