Biography
After completing his surgical internship at New York Hospital of Queens, Dr. Bulkin joined Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation at New York University where he completed residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He then finished his fellowship training at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York. He received extensive training in non-surgical management of wide variety of acute and chronic spine and musculoskeletal conditions.
After his training, Dr. Bulkin joined The Spine Institute of New York at Beth Israel Hospital where he served as an attending specializing in interventional management of spine conditions for the last five years. In 2013 Dr. Bulkin had joined Orthopedic Spine Center at Mount Sinai Hospital as an assistant professor. He is dually appointed in the department of Orthopaedics and Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
Dr. Bulkin is a spine specialist whose areas of expertise encompass non-surgical evaluation and treatment of spine and spine-related conditions. He favors comprehensive approach to back and neck pain that ranges from physical rehabilitation and patient education to pharmacological and minimally invasive fluoroscopically guided spinal procedures. Treatments are directed to improve patient’s function and help them achieve individual goals. Dr. Bulkin believes that patient’s education is just as important as investigation and treatment for long term maintenance of healthy spine.
On the daily basis Dr. Bulkin treats wide range of spine conditions: neck and back pain caused by herniated disc and arthritis, sciatica and pinched nerves.
In many cases minimally invasive procedures on the spine provide pain relieve and improvement in individual function as well as valuable diagnostic information that helps plan farther treatment for patients. Among most commonly performed procedures are epidural steroid injections of cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, facet joint injections, sacroiliac joint injections, nerve blocks, discography, radiofrequency neurotomy and peripheral joint injections (hip, knee, shoulder). He is skilled in electrophysiological diagnostic studies (EMG) of musculoskeletal conditions.
The clinical goal is aimed at restoring physical function by developing individualized treatment plans and working closely with all members of the spine care team.
Dr. Bulkin is board certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Additionally, he is an active member of various societies including the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the International Spine Intervention Society.
