- ADJUNCT PROFESSOR Ophthalmology
- Dr. John Danias is currently practicing part-time clinical ophthalmology with part-time involvement in basic research.
Dr. Danias received his M.D. in Greece at the University of Athens Medical School, where he then achieved a Ph.D. in Histology and Embryology. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the Naval Hospital of Athens. Upon moving to the United States, he did his internship in Internal Medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City and stayed in New York completing his ophthalmology residency and glaucoma fellowship at the Mount Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Danias is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Danias is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and of the Athens Medical Association. A devoted researcher, he is currently investigating the role of glutamate in the pathophysiology of glaucoma. His numerous published articles and chapters explore the effectiveness of intraocular pressure reduction in the treatment of normal-tension glaucoma, methods of detecting progression of optic nerve head damage in advanced glaucoma, and the effective use of topically administered hyperosmotic agents in patients with corneal edema secondary to acute glaucoma. Dr. Danias is also involved in developing the use of the ultrasound biomicroscope (UBM), a non-invasive method to achieve high resolution imaging of the anterior segment of the eye. The UBM is useful in certain cases of glaucoma, for imaging lesions present behind the iris and for imaging behind a cloudy cornea that could not otherwise be viewed by external examination.In the News
