    Dr. Leitman is a graduate of the Boston University School of Medicine. He received his general surgical training at the New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center and completed a fellowship in surgical critical care at North Shore University Hospital. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery in Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. He has been a career surgical educator. As a member of the faculty at North Shore University Hospital, he was appointed Director of Surgical Endoscopy, Physician-in-charge of Surgical Education, Program Director and Chief of Surgical Critical Care in 1995. In 1997, Dr. Leitman moved to Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City where he became the Program Director of the Surgical Residency. He joined the Department of Surgery at Mount Sinai Beth Israel in 2005 where he is presently Program Director of the General Surgery Residency, Vice Chairman of the Department of Surgery, and Chief of General Surgery. In 2007, he was appointed Associate Chief Medical Officer and in 2010 Chief of Graduate Medical Education. He is Professor of Surgery at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. In 2008, Dr. Leitman was the recipient of the Murry G. Fischer Distinguished Educator Award. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Society of Surgical Oncology and the author of more than 150 peer-reviewed scientific articles, book chapters and published abstracts. He is on the editorial board of 20 surgical journals and is on the Continuing Education Committee of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery and the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract. In 2014 Dr. Leitman was appointed Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and is responsible for all of the GME in the Icahn School of Medicine of Mount Sinai Consortium.
