Biography

    Dr. Keyhani is an Assistant Professor of Health Evidence and Policy at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She has an academic appointment in the Department of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics. She is also a physician investigator in Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center. She is a practicing primary care internist and a health services researcher. Dr. Keyhani completed residency training in internal medicine and a fellowship in the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar program at Johns Hopkins.  She also completed a health policy fellowship in the US Senate prior to joining the faculty at Mount Sinai. Her research interests include the examination of the quality of health care services and health care policy research. Her work has been featured in high impact medical and policy journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, BMJ and Health Affairs.

Conflicts of Interest

Dr. Keyhani also has active interest in conflicts of interest and its impact on physician attitudes, practice and on guideline development.

The Quality of Health Care

Dr. Keyhani's quality of care research to date has focused on examining the underuse and overuse of medical procedures, comparing receipt of appropriate preventive care in different systems of care and examining the impact of health information technology on the quality of care.

Federal Policy Research

Dr. Keyhani's policy research has largely focused on pharmaceutical policy and coverage expansions. She has surveyed physicians on their views regarding coverage expansions (the public option and Medicare expansions), defensive medicine, comparative effectiveness research and reimbursement reform. She has also examined international trends in pharmaceutical innovation, drug pricing and the regulation of pharmaceutical promotion.

Industry Relationships

Physicians and scientists on the faculty of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai often interact with pharmaceutical, device and biotechnology companies to improve patient care, develop new therapies and achieve scientific breakthroughs. In order to promote an ethical and transparent environment for conducting research, providing clinical care and teaching, Mount Sinai requires that salaried faculty inform the School of their relationships with such companies.
