Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are common conditions associated with a high burden of medical illness. This study seeks to understand what makes veterans with these serious mental disorders more vulnerable to the development of diabetes and related medical conditions, which further impedes their overall health, functional abilities and quality of life. Determining whether PTSD, MDD or their interaction increase risk for insulin resistance and the metabolic syndrome would be an important step in efforts aimed at reducing the secondary medical consequences of these psychiatric disorders.
