Description

The goal of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of using photodynamic therapy with 20% aminolevulinic acid relative to conventional therapies in the treatment of periungual warts. Conventional treatment consists of liquid nitrogen cryotherapy, in which wart-bearing skin is frozen in an attempt to kill epidermal cells infected by the virus. Problems with liquid nitrogen include pain during and after treatment, permanent skin discoloration, and other forms of scarring. Alternative methods to cryotherapy are reported to have similar or lower cure rates and/or to have similar side effects.
