WKNO (NPR for the Mid-South) – How Firefighters Cope With Profound Tragedy – Alan Greenblatt
The 19 firefighters who died in Prescott, Arizona, on Sunday were part of a Prescott fire department hotshot team, but many other hotshots work for the U.S. Forest Service. “An event of such magnitude as the Yarnell Hill fire can offer an opportunity for firefighters to talk more generally about their fears,” said Rachel Yehuda, MD, Professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience at The Mount Sinai Medical Center, who has consulted with fire departments. "The important thing to understand is that very few people are completely impervious to the effects of trauma, and you don't want them to be."
