Multiple Sclerosis

The Friedman Brain Institute at the Mount Sinai Health System offers one of the most comprehensive multiple sclerosis (MS) treatment programs in the United States. Our broad base of physicians, scientists, and other medical specialists offer cutting-edge programs in disease management, including diagnostics and experimental therapeutics, as well as mental health care and support services. Working under the auspices of The Friedman Brain Institute, the Corinne Goldsmith Dickinson Center for Multiple Sclerosis, led by Director Fred D. Lublin, MD, is dedicated to improving the quality of life for patients with MS and finding a cure for this potentially debilitating autoimmune disease.

Treatment at Mount Sinai

We offer comprehensive, centralized care, including:

  • Diagnosis
  • Disease management
  • Rehabilitation
  • Support services

Our Research

Through research, The Friedman Brain Institute is developing novel and more effective therapies that provide new levels of insight into the nature of MS. Under the direction of internationally acclaimed neuroscientists, such as Patrizia Casaccia, MD, PhD, The Friedman Brain Institute has developed leading-edge clinical research and basic science programs. Our researchers use state-of-the-art technologies to gain a better understanding of the progressive phase of the disease and to identify new treatments aimed at restoring function. Our research includes:

  • Participation in clinical research protocols of novel therapeutics
  • A focus on the myelin sheath and glial-cell biology, in addition to myelin repair, regeneration, and neuroprotection
  • Efforts to develop new diagnostic tests, for example, through neuroimaging

Clinical Trials

We support a leading clinical trials program, where patients have access to and are recruited for a wide range of clinical trials testing the effectiveness of new treatments. These clinical trials provide eligible patients with access to therapies not yet widely available.

Our doctors and scientists are among the first in the country to:

  • Spearhead studies of Interferon beta-1b
  • Pilot a clinical trial of a potential new therapy for neuromyelitis optica

The Friedman Brain Institute provides a multidisciplinary approach to the care and treatment of patients with MS, conducts advanced scientific research on the disease, and administers innovative clinical trials, with the vision of truly creating a holistic approach to treating each patient.
