Hepatocellular Carcinoma Program
The Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) Program is a comprehensive multidisciplinary program that incorporates all aspects of the disease from community screening to fundamental mechanisms of heptocarcinogenesis.
The program focuses on advancing our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying chronic liver disease and cancer in order to enhance our ability to detect, treat, and cure HCC. The HCC Program of the Tisch Cancer Institute aims to address these problems through its highly integrated and internationally recognized research program. Our core activities include extensive outreach programs in ethnic communities to screen and detect viral hepatitis and HCC, laboratory studies of HCV, HBV and HCC pathogenesis using a range of mammalian and genetically tractable models (e.g., zebrafish), fundamental investigations into the molecular and cellular basis of hepatic fibrosis and alcoholic liver disease, and large clinical trials to advance the diagnosis and treatment of hepatic fibrosis, viral hepatitis and HCC. By further aligning this TCI program through newly established institutional strengths in epidemiology, community outreach and personalized medicine, the HCC Program is poised to accelerate its contributions to advancing our understanding and care of this disease.
HCC investigators aim to elucidate fundamental mechanisms that underpin the basis of chronic liver disease, including pathways of intracellular signaling, inflammation and fibrosis in response to environmental challenges (viruses and alcohol), utilizing advanced models of disease in a range of species.
The HCC Program revolves around three major themes:
- Theme 1 - Basic mechanisms of chronic hepatic inflammation that lead to HCC
- Theme 2 - Molecular and cellular basis of hepatic fibrosis and HCC
- Theme 3 - Innovative therapeutic strategies for HCC (pre-clinical and clinical)
Program Meeting Schedule
The HCC Program regularly holds the following meetings:
- HCC Program Meeting (monthly)
- Hepatocellular Carcinoma Retreat (annual)
- Postgraduate CME Course (annual)
For more information on any of these meetings, please contact the program leaders.
