Maternal Cell Contamination

Test Description:
Molecular testing of prenatal samples such as amniotic fluid or chorionic villi may in rare instances produce inaccurate results due to contamination from maternal material. Testing for maternal cell contamination is highly recommended for all prenatal samples when molecular testing is ordered on the specimen. A blood sample from the mother should be submitted along with each prenatal sample in order to perform these studies.

Specimen Requirements:
Two 5-10 ml tubes of anticoagulated blood. The preferred anticoagulant is EDTA (lavendar top tubes), ACD (yellow top) tubes are also accepted.
