Resources

There are many resources available for the comfort and care of study participants in the Clinical Research Unit (CRU) at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS). Both researchers and subjects can expect care, attention, and state-of-the-art services for the duration of their time at the CRU.

Facility

Our facility provides private rooms, including quiet spaces for interviews. For participant comfort, we have private televisions and wifi access.

Nursing

The nursing team of the Clinical Research Unit (CRU) has expertise in all aspects of research nursing and clinical care. Our staff includes nurse practitioners (NPs), nurses, and medical technicians who have extensive experience in research-related nursing services. NPs are able to assist with study-related medical evaluations of research participants.

Outpatient nursing services include:

  • Performing physical examinations
  • Obtaining electrocardiograms
  • Administering study medications
  • Adverse event monitoring including telemetry monitoring
  • Specimen sampling and processing

Our nursing team is also available to assist in the reviewing of order forms, flow sheets, study-specific materials, and procedures to ensure that all of the elements are in place to safely and effectively proceed with studies.

Sample Processing and Storage

Research nurses and medical assistants are available to perform specimen processing, to include hematology slide preparation, plasma, buffy coat and serum extraction. Temporary storage of samples is also available.

Overview of Using the CRU

The Introduction to the Clinical Research Unit reviews the resources available and procedures for using the CRU.

With support from the Clinical Translational Science Award (CTSA) we are pleased to offer consultation for navigating clinical research related to study participant interactions (identifying how to obtain research laboratory tests, creating order sets, equipment management, and utilizing the CRU resource).
