Minocycline for Bipolar Disorder

The purpose of this study is to evaluate minocycline as a potential treatment for bipolar depression when added to a mood-stabilizing medication. Minocycline is an antibiotic that is FDA approved for the treatment of infections and acne. Participation in this research study is expected to last eight weeks, and includes five outpatient visits. Visits one and five are expected to last four and three hours while visits two, three, and four are expected to last one hour. We will administer a battery of neuropsychological tests before the onset of medication treatment and at the end of the study. Volunteers may also participate in an optional brain scan before starting the medication and at the end of the study. Participants will be reimbursed up to $275 for their time. One may be eligible for this study if s/he is between the ages of 18 and 68 and has a diagnosis of bipolar disorder I or II, and is currently depressed and taking a mood-stabilizing medication.
