Lawrence C. Newman, MD, of Mount Sinai Roosevelt Elected New President of The American Headache Society
Neurologist is Also Director of The Headache Institute at Mount Sinai Roosevelt
Lawrence C. Newman, MD, director of The Headache Institute and an attending neurologist at Mount Sinai Roosevelt, has been elected president of the American Headache Society (AHS), the professional society of more than 1,500 health care providers dedicated to the study and treatment of headache and face pain.
Dr. Newman is a professor of neurology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Board certified in neurology, Dr. Newman was one of the first in the nation to have completed a formal fellowship in headache, and has since trained many headache specialists in the subspecialty of Headache Medicine. He is also one of some 400 physicians in the country with Board Certification in Headache Medicine.
“I look forward to serving as President of AHS for the next two years. During my tenure, I hope to work closely with our membership to meet their needs and I hope to build upon the successes of our organization and to strengthen our bonds with regional headache societies as well,” says Dr. Newman. “I believe that AHS is and must remain the premier source of headache education in the country for clinicians and patients. Since migraine is a life-long disorder, I hope to promote awareness of pediatric and adolescent headache disorders so that we can take steps to identify and treat young people early to avoid needless suffering later in life. Because headache is a prominent symptom of concussion and other forms of traumatic brain injury, I believe AHS must become the cornerstone of information, education, and research in these areas. Headache research is woefully underfunded, so it is imperative that AHS, through legislative and other avenues, act to correct this disparity. “
Under Dr. Newman’s leadership, The Headache Institute at Mount Sinai Roosevelt was recently selected as one of only 10 headache centers in the United States to earn the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Center of Excellence Designation. Founded in 1998, the Headache Institute is dedicated solely to treating recurrent head or facial pain. Dr. Newman has authored or co-authored more than 30 original publications as well as monographs and book chapters on various aspects of migraine medicine and other headache disorders. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology and the American Headache Society. Dr. Newman is a member of the International Headache Society and serves on the Executive Board of the Headache Cooperative of New England.
