Concerned scientists say the sperm count of men in Western nations has dropped significantly since the 1970s, a change that might signify underlying public health issue. “The fact that the decline is seen in Western countries strongly suggests that chemicals in commerce are playing a causal role in this trend,” said co-author of the study Shanna Swan, PhD, professor of environmental medicine and public health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Swan and her colleagues did not look into any possible causes of the decrease but believe it could be a sign of overall declining health in the West. “A decline in sperm count might be a considered as a ‘canary in the coal mine’ for math health across the lifespan,” she added.
