Lyons, Albert S., MD, Papers, 1932-2000
Summary
Creator: Lyons, Dr. Albert S.
Title: Papers
Dates: 1932-2000
Volume: 15 boxes, 12 feet, 5 inches
Preface
This collection contains the personal and professional papers of Albert S. Lyons, MD, who was a surgeon on the Mount Sinai voluntary staff, founded the Mount Sinai Archives and served for many years as the Archivist of The Mount Sinai Medical Center. After retiring from the practice of medicine and closing his personal office he used the Archives office to store his papers. Some of these files were brought to the Archives from his previous office; others, such as his files on the history of medicine, were maintained in the Archives exclusively. In his later years Dr. Lyons would often deposit large envelopes of miscellaneous material in the Archives with the intent of eventually interfiling it with the rest of the collection.
Due to these circumstances, the collection prior to processing contained a number of partial and overlapping series as well as a significant quantity of material with no discernible order. The arrangement and description of the collection therefore required the imposition of significant artificial order. During the processing of this collection, approximately 12 linear feet of material was discarded, consisting primarily of clippings and photocopies from medical journals and the popular press which Dr. Lyons kept as research material. A full list of discarded material is appended to this finding aid following the container list.
The finding aid was created by Nicholas Webb in 2011. A small accretion of material from the vertical file of the Mount Sinai Archives was added to the collection in 2014. A collection of glass presentation slides found during renovation preparations in the Archives office was added to the collection in May 2015. Approximately 7” of loose material found in a vertical file, primarily relating to the history of the Mount Sinai Archives and the Medical Archivists of New York, was added in October 2016.
Biographical Note
A native of New York City, Albert S. Lyons was born in 1912 and graduated from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1936. After completing a two-year surgical internship at Beth Israel Hospital, he trained as a surgical resident at Mount Sinai under the tutelage of Dr. John Garlock. He went on to a long career as a surgeon at Mount Sinai, serving as Chief of the Intestinal Rehabilitation Clinic at The Mount Sinai Hospital and as Clinical Professor of Surgery at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He also maintained a private practice and served as an attending surgeon at several other hospitals, including the Cabrini Medical Center from 1955 to 1978 and the Elmhurst City Hospital from 1966 to 1984.
As Chief of the Intestinal Rehabilitation Clinic, Dr. Lyons played a major role in the establishment of patient self-help groups to help surgical patients cope with the challenges of life after surgery. In 1951 he helped a group of ileostomy patients at Mount Sinai organize a club to boost morale and help one another; nicknamed the "QT Club" after the letters of the surgical wards where patients recovered after their ostomies, the group proved a success, and in 1952 Dr. Lyons published an article on the club in the Journal of the American Medical Association that inspired the formation of similar groups throughout the United States. In 1963, representatives of ostomate self-help groups from across the U.S. and Canada met for the founding convention of the United Ostomy Association (UOA). Dr. Lyons served for many years as the UOA's Medical Advisor, and when an International Ostomy Association (IOA) was formed in 1978, he served as a member of its medical board. In 1983 he was the first recipient of the Archie Vinitsky Award, the IOA's highest honor. Throughout his life he gave generously of his time to help ostomy groups across North America and the world.
Dr. Lyons was active in many regional and national professional associations. He was a founding member of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, a Governor of the New York Area of the American College of Gastroenterology, and an active member of the New York Surgical Society. He served from 1963 to 1971 as Chairman of the Public Relations Committee of the New York County Medical Society, from 1971 to 1973 as the Society's Assistant Secretary, and from 1973 to 1978 as its Secretary. In the early 1970s he chaired the New York State Medical Society's Ad Hoc Committee to Study Professional Medical Liability Insurance, and in the late 1970s he was active in the American Cancer Society as Chairman of the New York Division's Committee on Rehabilitation and Service. He was also an active member of the Physicians' Wine Appreciation Society.
In addition to his surgical and professional accomplishments, Dr. Lyons was a passionate scholar of the history of medicine. During the early years of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine he was an active advocate of a strong role for history in the medical curriculum. He taught seminars in medical history and arranged a regular lecture series that brought many distinguished medical historians to the Mount Sinai campus. He served for many years as President of the Medical Archivists of New York and was President from 1970 to 1972 of the Friends of the Rare Book Room at The New York Academy of Medicine. His involvement with medical history led him to an engagement with the broader historical profession; he was a founding member of the Oral History Association and served as Chairman of its Nominating Committee. In 1978 he published a lavishly illustrated volume, Medicine: An Illustrated History (New York: Harry N. Abrams Publishing), which brought together the work of many scholars to create a comprehensive history of medicine from ancient times to the present.
Dr. Lyons's interest in medical history led him to establish the Mount Sinai Archives in 1966 so that the history of the Hospital (and, later, of the Medical School) could be preserved for future generations. In 1986 he obtained the approval of the President of Mount Sinai to hire a professional archivist and establish the Archives on a formal basis within the Levy Library.
Following the success of Medicine: An Illustrated History, Dr. Lyons turned his attention to other historical subjects. His interest in pre-scientific methods of medical prognosis led to a broader interest in the enduring human desire to know the future, inspiring him to carry out an extensive study of pre-modern fortunetelling methods such as tarot cards and astrology. In 1991 he published Predicting The Future: An Illustrated History and Guide to the Techniques, a lavish volume in the same format as his previous book on medicine. In correspondence with his agent at Harry N. Abrams Publishing he proposed an ambitious series of illustrated historical volumes covering all the major milestones of human life, including birth, childhood, marriage and death; although none of these books were completed, he accumulated an extensive collection of reference material on these subjects.
After his retirement from surgery, Dr. Lyons stayed active in medicine by working as a reviewer of workmen's compensation cases while continuing to pursue his interest in history and the Archives. In 1974 he was awarded the Jacobi Medallion by the Associated Alumni of Mount Sinai, which he had served as President in 1969-1970, for his dedication to the Hospital and the School of Medicine. He died in 2006 after over 60 years of service to Mount Sinai.
Scope and Content Note
The Dr. Albert S. Lyons Papers consist primarily of the professional records of Dr. Albert S. Lyons and of the ostomate self-help groups with which he was involved. They also include material related to Dr. Lyons' research and publications in the history of medicine. The collection is organized into nine series. As noted in the preface, the disorganization of the collection meant that a substantial amount of artificial order was imposed on its content during processing, but the original order of the papers serves as the foundation upon which the following arrangement was developed.
Series 1: Correspondence, 1943-2000 (bulk 1945-1985) - Boxes 1-2
This series contains the personal and professional correspondence of Dr. Albert S. Lyons, including both incoming and outgoing correspondence. It is organized alphabetically by the last name of the correspondent. Of particular note are the extensive files of correspondence with Dr. Lyons's colleagues in the history of medicine, including Dr. Karel Absolon (box 1, folder 2) and Professor John Scarborough (b. 2, f. 14-15), and an early series of letters (b. 1, f. 42) from his mentor Dr. John Garlock regarding Dr. Lyons's admission to the American Board of Surgery.
The series includes some overlap in subject matter with the patient self-help organizations documented in Series 8. In cases where Dr. Lyons' correspondence file contained folders documenting his correspondence with officials of these groups, their original position in the correspondence file has been maintained, but to facilitate cross-referencing his correspondents have been identified as officials of particular organizations.
Series 2: Writings, [ca. 1935]-1983 - Boxes 2-3
Sub-Series 1: Published Reprints, 1944-1983 - Box 2
Sub-Series 2: Other Writings, [ca. 1935]-1983 - Boxes 2-3
This series contains formal written material by Dr. Lyons, including articles, lectures and reviews, arranged alphabetically by title. Sub-series 1, Published Reprints, contains writings for which the collection includes the final published version in some format (clipping, reprint, or offprint.) Sub-series 2 contains manuscripts and drafts with no accompanying published version.
The majority of the articles are professional publications in Dr. Lyons's field of gastrointestinal surgery, including his early publications as an assistant to Dr. John Garlock and his mature publications as a specialist on ostomies and related procedures. Of particular interest is the 1952 JAMA article (b. 2, f. 59) which introduced Dr. Lyons's work on the organization of patient self-help groups to a national audience. The series also includes the manuscripts of numerous lectures, primarily on topics related to ostomies and other gastrointestinal surgeries. In addition, it contains a selection of book reviews on topics in medical history and several articles relevant to the history of Mount Sinai, including a copy of Dr. Lyons's memorial speech for Dr. John Garlock (b. 3, f. 9), a lecture to the Jewish Historical Society on "Mount Sinai Hospital and the Jews of New York" (b. 3, f. 10-11), and Dr. Lyons's own reflections on how he became interested in medical archives (b. 2, f. 97).
Series 3: Professional Associations, 1960-1991 (bulk 1960-1975) - Boxes 3-4
This series contains the records of Dr. Lyons' involvement with a wide array of professional organizations. These records typically include correspondence, meeting minutes, event programs and handbooks. The series includes the records of his service as a board member and Chair of the Service and Rehabilitation Committee of the New York Division of the American Cancer Society (b. 3, f. 21-26); his membership and governorship of the New York Area of the American College of Gastroenterology (b. 3, f. 27-36); his service to the Medical Society of the State of New York, including his chairmanship of the Ad Hoc Committee to Study Professional Medical Liability Insurance (b. 3, f. 53-59); his membership in the New York Surgical Society (b. 3, f. 67-69); and his activities as a founding member of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (b. 3A, f. 8-12.)
Of particular note to medical historians are the records of the Medical Archivists of New York (b. 3, f. 41-48). The series also includes an extensive collection of the records of the Physicians' Wine Appreciation Society (b. 3A, f. 1-6), including newsletters, flyers for wine tastings, and a 1961 "Wine Wheel" used to determine which wine should be served with a particular dish.
Series 4: Project Files, [ca. 1935]-1991 (bulk 1960-1980) - Box 4
This series contains files on Dr. Lyons's many research projects both within and outside the field of medicine. It includes several files on surgical and medical research projects, including a study of artificial esophageal replacement (b. 4, f. 13-14), projects on ileostomy output (b. 4, f. 21-23), and a study of obesity and surgical risk (b. 4, f. 30). It also includes material related to Dr. Lyons's book Predicting the Future and to the many other illustrated historical volumes he proposed to his publisher.
A substantial quantity of clipped and/or photocopied research material was removed from this series during processing; see the Appendix for details.
Series 5: Oral History, 1966-1983 - Box 4
This series contains records related to the study and practice of oral history. Dr. Lyons was a founding member of the Oral History Association, and the series consists primarily of material from the Association's annual National Colloquium on Oral History conferences, including programs, rosters, notes and correspondence.
Series 6: History of Medicine, 1967-1990 (bulk 1970-1980) - Boxes 4-5
This series contains records related to Dr. Lyons's extensive research, teaching and writing on medical history. It includes drafts, correspondence and research material related to the book Medicine: An Illustrated History. In keeping with the original order of the papers, materials related to individual chapters of the book are filed under their specific subject heading (such as "Endocrinology," "Immunology," etc.) Materials related to the book also include a promotional poster for the French edition (b. 5, f. 17) and an extensive clipping file of reviews (b. 5, f. 39).
This series also contains the records of Dr. Lyons's activities as a teacher of medical history at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. His early efforts to establish a medical history program as part of the School's curriculum are documented by numerous items of correspondence and memoranda (b. 5, f. 51-56.) Records of the program itself include schedules, correspondence and flyers for the seminar series organized by Dr. Lyons (b. 5, f. 42-49) from 1969 through 1977 as well as syllabi, correspondence and student evaluations from the elective course he taught from 1977 through 1983.
A substantial quantity of clipped and/or photocopied research material was removed from this series during processing; see the Appendix for details.
Series 7: Subject File, 1932-1992 (bulk 1950-1980) - Boxes 5-6
This series contains subject files on a variety of topics. Of particular note are the files related to Mount Sinai, including the proposal which led to the creation of the Mount Sinai Archives (b. 6, f. 32-44) and the 1950-1951 records of the Association of Adjuncts and Associates, today's Association of The Attending Staff (b. 6, f. 45). The series also contains records related to the various other hospitals at which Dr. Lyons served (b. 6, f. 7-20), including extensive material from the City Hospital at Elmhurst and the Flower and Fifth Avenue Hospitals of New York Medical College.
The series also contains several files of importance to the documentation of Dr. Lyons's career, including curriculum vitae from various points in his life (b. 5, f. 70 - b. 6, f. 1), flyers and correspondence related to lectures he delivered (b. 6, f. 25), and a collection of letters of appointment (b. 6, f. 26). Of particular documentary interest is a 1968 surgical fee schedule from an unidentified office (b. 6, f. 62).
Series 8: Ostomies & Ostomy Associations, 1952-1999 - Boxes 6A-11
Sub-Series 1: United Ostomy Association, 1952-1992 (bulk 1963-1983) - Boxes 6A-8
Sub-Series 2: Other Ostomy Groups, 1953-1992 (bulk 1953-1980) - Boxes 8-9

Sub-Series 6: Ostomy Vendor Publications, 1952-1987 (bulk 1952-1970) - Box 11
This series contains material related to ostomy patient self-help groups and to ostomies in general. The first and largest sub-series contains the records of the United Ostomy Association, of which Dr. Lyons was a founder and where he served for many years as medical advisor. These records include material on annual conventions, pamphlets and other publications, board meeting minutes, committee reports, chapter handbooks, internal newsletters and memoranda, and a wide selection of correspondence. Correspondence includes external material addressed to Dr. Lyons as well as internal correspondence with UOA officials, particularly Virginia Pearce Geiger, who served for many years as editor of the Ostomy Quarterly.
Sub-series 2 contains the records of other ostomy organizations. It is organized alphabetically by the name of the organization. The Colostomy Society of New York and its sister group the Ileostomy Association of New York are represented by extensive files of correspondence, minutes and publications, which are particularly strong in documenting the early years of those organizations. QT Boston, the Boston ostomy group, is also represented by publications and correspondence, including a series of letters from 1953 documenting the establishment of the group. The series also contains an extensive file of material related to the National Foundation for Ileitis and Colitis. Other groups, including regional ostomy associations elsewhere in the United States and international organizations such as the Ostomy Association of India, are represented by smaller files of material. Of particular note are the files relating to the founding of the International Ostomy Association and its early conferences.
Note that numerous pamphlets, leaflets and other publications are filed in Sub-series 1 and 2 along with the other records of the organization that created them. The following sub-series, Sub-series 3, contains ostomy literature not associated with a particular group or for which the publisher is unidentified. These items range from an early manual on ostomy care by "A Former Patient on the Mount Sinai Surgical Wards" to elaborately produced books and AV materials.
Sub-series 4 contains a subject file of material related to ostomy care and ostomate self-help. It includes material on the intestinal rehabilitation clinic at Mount Sinai, which was a precursor to the organized ostomy groups, as well as miscellaneous clippings, manuscripts and correspondence. This sub-series also contains a small assortment of correspondence from the office of Dr. George Schreiber, who worked with Dr. Lyons to organize ostomy clubs. (This material arrived with the Lyons collection in the ostomy file.)
Sub-series 5 contains periodicals issued by various ostomy groups. It includes complete or near-complete runs of the newsletters of many organizations, including groups in Brooklyn, Chicago, Cleveland, Great Britain, Los Angeles, Manhattan, Palm Beach and Philadelphia, as well as smaller amounts of material from several other groups.
Sub-series 6 consists of publications - primarily catalogs, flyers and promotional leaflets - produced by private sector vendors of ostomy supplies. They are organized alphabetically by vendor.
Series 9: Plaques, Slides and Oversized Material, 1932-1991 - Boxes 11-13
This series contains oversized and artifactual material, including diplomas and professional certificates as well as numerous honorary plaques from professional organizations and ostomy groups. It also includes a pair of oversized posters from the UOA promoting the ostomy visitors’ program, a sample of ostomy appliances, and a collection of five glass projection slides used during presentations on ostomy care. It includes a selection of oversized material from other series that has been cross-referenced in those series' folder lists. Finally, it contains two reel-to-reel tape recordings of panels in which Dr. Lyons participated.

Appendix: Material Discarded During Processing
Approximately 12 linear feet of material, consisting largely of photocopies and clippings, was discarded during the processing of this collection. Dr. Lyons maintained clipping files on a wide variety of subjects both medical and general, and during the research process for his books Medicine: An Illustrated History, Predicting the Future and their unfinished sequels he accumulated a large collection of photocopies of volumes acquired via interlibrary loan. His medical research files typically contained clippings from medical journals; his general subject files contained clippings drawn from the New York Times and a wide range of scientific and cultural periodicals. Most often, the source and date of the clippings were unspecified.
The attached list documents the original order of these clippings, which were removed from the History of Medicine, Project Files and Subject Files series.
In addition to the discarded clippings, the collection contained approximately .4 linear feet of material related to the medical histories of Dr. Lyons' family member and close relatives. As private health information with little evidentiary value this material was disposed of by secure shredding.
The collection also contained approximately .5 linear feet of routine financial records including bank statements, insurance policies and cancelled checks. This material was also disposed of by secure shredding.
Finally, the collection contained a bottle of Heparin powder that Dr. Lyons had compounded for a research project in 1952. As potentially active pharmaceutical material, this bottle was given to the Mount Sinai Pharmacy, which disposed of it in accordance with standard pharmaceutical practice.
