Preface

The majority of this collection (1930-1980) was retrieved in September 2016 from an offsite storage account belonging to the Beth Israel Medical Center.

Incomplete minutes for the years 1988-1998 had previously arrived at the Mount Sinai Archives as part of a large April 2015 shipment of material that was in the custody of the Continuum Health Partners legal department. These records arrived in an extremely disorderly condition; during processing, identifiable records series which had become dispersed across multiple containers, such as the present collection of Medical Board minutes, were consolidated into discrete collections. As discussed in the scope and content note below, this portion of the records series is incomplete.

Historical Note

The Beth Israel Hospital was founded in New York City in 1889. Initially established to serve the Lower East Side's growing population of Eastern European Jewish immigrants, the Hospital grew into a major charitable hospital serving patients of all backgrounds. In the 1890s it was based out of existing structures on the Lower East Side, but in 1902 the Hospital moved to a purpose-built hospital building on Jefferson and Cherry Streets, and in 1929 it relocated to its present location on East 17th Street. As part of this move, the Hospital’s Medical Board was reorganized along modern specialty lines.

In the ensuing years the Hospital affiliated with numerous other medical institutions and expanded its 17th Street campus through the construction of new buildings and the purchase of adjacent structures, including the neighboring Manhattan General Hospital. In 1965 the institution was renamed the Beth Israel Medical Center to reflect this growth.

In 1997, Beth Israel joined several other New York City hospitals in the establishment of Continuum Health Partners, a multi-hospital system. Following the merger of Continuum Health Partners and The Mount Sinai Medical Center in 2013, Beth Israel became a part of the newly established Mount Sinai Health System. It was renamed Mount Sinai Beth Israel the following year.

Scope and Content

This collection contains the minutes of the Beth Israel Medical Center Medical Board and its subcommittees. With the exception of two missing volumes (1946 and 1976 vol. 1), it includes a complete run of Medical Board minutes between 1930 and 1980. The years 1981-1987 are missing.

The records of the years 1988-1998 are fragmentary. There is no material for the years 1992, 1995 and 1997. Some years include both the main Medical Board minutes and a partial or complete set of subcommittee minutes. Others contain the minutes of  subcommittees, in various degrees of completeness, but not the minutes of the main Board.
