The Flex-Grad Program

The Flex Grad Program at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai provides a pathway to early admission into our graduate school (PhD and MD/PhD programs) for students already enrolled in our Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP).

The SURP program is targeted to undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing careers as research scientists (future PhD and MD/PhD graduate students only). The program runs for ten weeks from June to August and is a non-degree, non-credit undergraduate experience. At the culmination of the program, SURP students will be evaluated for admission into Flex-Grad based on a criterion that includes research skills, as well as oral and poster presentation.

Select rising juniors and seniors will be conditionally admitted into the PhD or MD/PhD degree programs through Flex-Grad. Early admission to the Graduate School through our Flex-Grad program is coupled with waived standardized testing and credit for laboratory rotations, allowing students an accelerated pathway to a PhD or MD/PhD degree at ISMMS.

All Flex-Grad students will receive free housing and $5,000 direct reimbursement for the summer.

The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences prepares students with the tools needed to succeed in research. We welcome applications from all eligible students without regard to race, creed, color, religion, national origin, age, gender, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, veteran status, or citizenship.
