Bachir Taouli, MD, MS, is Professor of Radiology and Medicine in the Body Imaging Section (Department of Radiology) and the Translational and Molecular Imaging Institute (TMII) at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York. After completing medical school and Radiology Residency in Paris VI University (France) in 2000, he joined the UCSF Department of Radiology for a research fellowship and post-doctoral clinical training. He then joined the NYU Department of Radiology where he worked for 6 years and where he developed clinical applications of advanced MRI techniques applied to liver, kidney and prostate diseases, including diffusion and perfusion imaging and spectroscopy. He joined the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in 2009, where he is currently the director of Body MRI and Cancer Imaging in the Department of Radiology and TMII. Dr Taouli has been named vice-chair for translational research in April 2017. Dr. Taouli is a clinician scientist with particular expertise in the application of advanced MRI sequences applied to diffuse liver disease/liver cancer and abdominal and pelvic malignancies, including prostate cancer. He directs the Body MRI quantitative group at TMII (https://tmii.mssm.edu/research/research-laboratories/taouli-lab/). Dr. Taouli has extensive experience in Body MRI, and has been successfully NIH funded since 2010. He has authored/co-authored over 164 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters primarily on body MRI, and lectured throughout the world on advanced body MRI techniques. Finally, Dr Taouli is a member of several scientific societies, including the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM), the American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS), the Society of Abdominal Radiology (SAR), the European Society of Radiology (ESR), the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), and the European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (ESGAR). He is a previous Associate editor for the American Journal of Roentgenology, previous member of the Annual Meeting Program Committee of the ISMRM, and the RSNA Gastrointestinal Radiology Subcommittee.

Assessment of prostate cancer with MRI
MRI is the primary modality used for prostate cancer detection and staging. One of Dr Taouli's research interests is the use of multiparametric MRI to better detect and stage prostate cancer, and assess and predict response to radiation therapy.
Prediction of the degree of portal hypertension in patients with cirrhosis
The goal of this study is to develop non invasive tools based on MR elastography and phase-contrast 4D flow imaging of the liver and spleen as biomarkers of portal pressure in patients with chronic liver disease.
Assessment of liver cancer with advanced MRI methods
Primary liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma: HCC) can be treated aggressively when diagnosed early, using for example hepatic resection of transplantation. Imaging plays a pivotal role in the detection of hepatocellular carcinoma. MRI is especially attractive as it is radiation free and can be easily repeated in patients with liver disease on a regular basis. One of Dr Taouli's research interests is to characterize liver tumors in terms of aggressiveness, angiogenesis and oxygen delivery through the use of advanced MRI methods.
HCC screening using abbreviated MRI
An abbreviated MRI protocol (less than 15 min acquisition time) using a liver specific agent such as gadoxetic acid has the potential to improve liver cancer detection compared to standard ultrasound. We have started a prospective research protocol comparing the abbreviated MRI to ultrasound for HCC screening in patients with cirrhosis.
Non invasive detection of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis with MRI
MRI is a versatile technique, with no radiation exposure, and the possibility of performing multiparametric imaging. One of the interesting applications of MRI is the non invasive detection of liver damage caused by hepatitis and other insults, usually assessed with liver biopsy. Dr Taouli's experience using diffusion and perfusion MRI showed potential usefulness for detection of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. MR elastography is also an emerging technique that will soon be offered routinely to patients with liver disease at Mount Sinai.
Radiogenomics of HCC using qualitative and quantitative MRI
The goal of this study is to develop and validate robust and reproducible qualitative and quantitative MRI-signatures of genomic aberrations of HCC, and that ultimately predict response to molecular targeted therapies, enabling personalized management of HCC patients.
