Dr. Sharon M. Edwards is Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Medical Education and she is the Director of the Mount Sinai School Based Health Program. The program offers clinics that are available at five East Harlem school locations. These clinics provide medical and mental health care within the public school. Dr. Edwards provides medical care at the sites and is also the director and administrator of the operation. Dr. Edwards runs bi-monthly in-service meetings for the multidisciplinary staff from case conferences to guest speakers. The School Based Health program is well known in East Harlem and serves as a training ground for medical students, social work students and pediatric residents. As an adolescent medicine specialist, Dr. Edwards provides comprehensive care for adolescents at the nationally known Adolescent Health Center. Her research has focused on contraception in adolescents and novel methods to improve adherence with birth control methods.
Dr. Edwards also serves as the Vice Chair of Diversity Initiatives for the Jack and Lucy Clark Department of Pediatrics and is a member of the Board of the New York State School Based Alliance. As a the chairperson and founding member of the Department of Pediatrics Committee on Diversity, she has helped to recruit and retain diverse applicants at both a resident and faculty level. Dr. Edwards is one of the faculty advisors at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and guides a cohort of medical students and teaches at the medical school.
