The BioMedical Engineering and Imaging Institute

The BioMedical Engineering and Imaging Institute (BMEII), formerly the Translational and Molecular Imaging Institute, leverages the advancements made by TMII's imaging and nanomedicine programs to establish a broad biomedical engineering research and development program as well as training opportunities for graduate and medical students. The focus of the BMEII will be in medical imaging, nanomedicine, artificial intelligence, sensor technologies, next generation medical devices, robotics and computer vision.

Message from the Director

The primary goal of BioMedical Engineering and Imaging Institute is to develop unique approaches to biomedical sciences and therapeutic interventions by bridging basic and translational research and education by leveraging expertise in medicine and engineering. Engineering and engineering science are fundamentals to understanding the basic biomedical phenomena and associated therapeutic interventions. Major inventions and innovations that have shaped modern medicine were born out of close collaborations of engineers with biomedical researchers and clinicians, ranging from medical devices and highly sensitive and accurate bioimaging systems, to new drug target discovery and accelerated drug discovery. We have and we will continue to wisely and strategically invest in BMEII in order to lead in biomedical discovery, disease understanding and translation to patient care. By exploring our website you will learn how BMEII is unique due to its dual focus on research and education, the interrelationships between biomedical research and engineering, and spanning the molecular to human dimensions of biomedical research. I look forward to a future of advancing biomedical scientific discoveries thanks to the wonderful faculty, trainees, staff and collaborators at BMEII.

Imaging Science

BMEII Imaging Science programs work to improve diagnostics and treatment effectiveness by developing state-of-the-art imaging acquisition and processing techniques.

Our imaging programs are focused on applications in: Neuroimaging, Cancer & Body Imaging, Cardiovascular/Cardiac Imaging and Immunoimaging

The Clinical Trials Unit develops imaging endpoints for multicenter clinics and the Imaging Research Warehouse integrates imaging with electronic health records.

Imaging Core Facilities

The BioMedical Engineering and Imaging Institute (BMEII) is responsible for providing support for all in-vivo imaging research at Mount Sinai. The Imaging Core Facility (the Core) is the backbone of BMEII and is responsible for coordinating, supporting, and executing imaging pre-clinical and clinical research at Mount Sinai.

The Core supports all the image acquisition, image analysis, scheduling, and performance of the proposed experiments. The Core has an extensive and expanding inventory of preclinical (large and small) and clinical research imaging facilities and equipment.

The Core’s resources are fully supported by user fees drawn from research grants, instrumentation grants, industry contracts, and agreements. Our core facilities are available for use to all qualified investigators from academic, medical, government, and industry laboratories.

Biomedical Engineering

The future of Medicine will be shaped by the emergence of the next generation of biomedical engineering disciplines that leverage the exponential increase in data and combine it with the computational power to interrogate it, model it, visualize it, built it into machines, and to commercialize it for deployment.

Throughout Mount Sinai, there exist the seeds of a robust biomedical engineering research, design, translation, and entrepreneurship community. To these ends, the Translational and Molecular Imaging Institute (TMII) will be expanded and rebranded into a new BioMedical Engineering and Imaging Institute (BMEII).

BMEII will attract field-leading faculty, develop unique research and training programs attracting the best medical and graduate students and young innovators, and generate new grants, intellectual property and novel opportunities in entrepreneurship for the Mount Sinai Health System. The BMEII at Mount Sinai is a center of excellence in innovation, training and entrepreneurship in the new fields critical to this transformation of Medicine in addition to the already existing strong imaging and nanomedicine programs within TMII. These new programs will be in: 1) Artificial Intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML); 2) Next generation medical technologies (devices, sensors, and robotics); and 3) Computer vision, virtual and augmented reality.
