According to a December report by the Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), about 16.6 million Americans experienced identity theft in 2012. Identity theft can have a serious psychological impact, not unlike post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). “You could expect people’s emotions to range on the spectrum from feeling like it’s an inconvenience of living in a society where everything is online to feeling very disturbed and vulnerable,” said Rachel Yehuda, MD, Professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience, and Director of the Traumatic Stress Studies Division at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
