Message from Dean Charney, MD
Diversity among faculty, students, and staff is critical to overall excellence at Icahn School of Medicine. Our campus is located at the intersection of New York City's most and least affluent zip codes, and our patient population is among the most ethnically diverse in the United States. With this foundation, we are committed to—and uniquely positioned for—promoting diversity and inclusion in research, clinical care, and education. Indeed, our groundbreaking discoveries in biomedical science and clinical innovation stem from the diversity and talent of our world-class research and medical faculty.
This site outlines our institution's diversity efforts, and our Diversity Statement describes in depth the broad range of resources that support diversity at Mount Sinai. Below I want to highlight the outstanding leaders and resources behind all of these efforts.
- The Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs, directed by Gary C. Butts, MD, Associate Dean for Diversity Policy, Programs, and Community Affairs, is the hub of minority health, health disparities, and diversity affairs for the school.
- The Office for Women's Careers, directed by Sandra K. Masur, PhD, Associate Dean for Faculty Development, gives women faculty the tools and information needed for successful careers in science and medicine.
- The Diversity in Biomedical Research Committee is charged with improving diversity within the Basic Sciences and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences via pipeline development, recruitment, and retention/ promotion among groups under-represented in science to drive excellence in excellence in biomedical, translation, clinical, and health disparities research.
- The Office of Academic Enhancement and Enrichment, led by Lakshmi Devi, PhD, Dean for Academic Development and Enrichment, creates and supports system-wide mentoring efforts by working in partnership with the diversity resources noted above.
I am proud to work with such committed and creative individuals. Their efforts, and the others you will read about on this site, are necessary to advancing our diversity mission, demonstrating the breadth of our commitment to diversity, and supporting excellence in all areas at Mount Sinai.
