Center for Excellence in Youth Education

The Center for Excellence in Youth Education is a unit of Mount Sinai Health System’s Office for Diversity and Inclusion. Through our wide range of education pathway programming, we open doors for underrepresented and economically disadvantaged students, changing the face of science, medicine, and other health care professions.

Since 1975, the Center for Excellence in Youth Education has made a difference in the lives of thousands of students from New York City schools, as well as countless faculty, staff, and post-graduate trainees. Our programming relies on the real-world classroom of the Mount Sinai Health System, where students interact with faculty and staff, participate in specialized curriculums, develop mentorships, and more.

Biomedical Science Enrichment Program
This program is for juniors and seniors attending the High School for Mathematics, Science and Engineering at City College, offering lab skill preparation in the field of biomedical sciences including cellular and molecular biology, genetics, and genomics in year one and clinical and laboratory internship in year two.

The Lloyd Sherman Scholars Program
Geared toward high school-aged boys underrepresented in medicine at the Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics, this research preparation program offers classroom and laboratory training in the field of biomedical science.

Middle School Programs

Day-With-a-Scientist Series
Geared toward eighth graders, this full-day immersion series orients students to a different major organ each session.

Neuroscience 101 With Mentoring in Discovery at Mount Sinai (MiNDS)
Mentoring in Neuroscience Discovery at Sinai (MiNDS) is a faculty- and trainee-run volunteer group based out of the Friedman Brain Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. MiNDS is determined to make neuroscience education fun and accessible through interactive classroom courses, laboratory tours, and online educational content.

High School Programs

Ninth Grade Club
This club is an all-boys program at the Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics, exposing students to STEM curriculum to encourage long-term scientific engagement, and to create a pipeline to the Lloyd Sherman Scholars Program.

10th Grade Engagement Session
In the 10th Grade Engagement Session, young men at the Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics participate in two hands-on sessions at the Icahn Mount Sinai campus before going on to join the Lloyd Sherman Scholars Program.

Champions in Critical Analysis of Science (ChiCAS) Program
ChiCAS is an all-girls program at the Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics, exposing students to STEM curriculum to encourage long-term scientific engagement.

The Center for Excellence in Youth Education offers three competitive programs each summer. Applications are released each year in January.

Introduction to Bioinformatics
This online course is designed to teach high school students the basic concepts of cellular and molecular biology, genomic science, and computer programming. Students finish the course by completing projects on bioinformatics using open access genomic data. Applications can be completed using the online form.

Medical and Scientific Exploration Program
This online course is designed to guide students through different laboratories or clinical departments within the Mount Sinai Health System through the real-world application of scientific concepts. Applications can be completed using the online form.

Hospital Placement
This in-person program is designed to expose current 11th grade students to health careers through a hands-on summer internship in a single department within the Mount Sinai Health System. Applications can be completed using the online form.

Doctors Reaching Minority Males Exploring Neuroscience (DR. MMEN)
A partnership between the Center for Excellence in Youth Education and the Mount Sinai Department of Neuroscience, DR. MMEN is a summer mentorship program for young Black and Latino men in high school and includes clinical immersion within neurosurgery and related fields. Applications can be completed using the online form.

Veterinary Sciences
This internship-based program is designed to expose high school students to veterinary sciences in a biomedical research environment while enhancing their basic science knowledge and language skills. Applications can be completed using the online form.
