Message from the Chair

Anesthesiology has been at the forefront of medical progress since its inception. Most recently the knowledge, pharmacology, procedural expertise, technology and training brought to bear has revolutionized our practice, leading to a remarkable record of safety and patient satisfaction. As specialists in perioperative medicine, our department is committed to providing the leadership necessary to achieve the highest quality clinical care possible and uncompromised safety throughout the perioperative continuum including pain relief and critical care.

We pride ourselves as being leaders in education and research. More than 100 outstanding residents and fellows train in an environment that includes over 60 anesthetizing locations and about 65,000 cases per year, representing all the subspecialties of anesthesiology. We created one of the first simulation programs in the world. This program has helped train health care providers for two decades and has produced several simulation directors who have gone on to found accredited centers. As of April 2014, this is the only American Society of Anesthesiology accredited simulation center in New York City.

The fellowships in Cardiothoracic, Critical Care, Pain, Obstetrics, and Regional complement the residency and are highly attractive positions that attract top caliber applicants. Our informatics capabilities are widely recognized as a standard in academic anesthesiology and help form the backbone of our operations and performance improvement efforts.

While technology and equipment are the visible objects that impress potential residents and fellows, phenomenal faculty mentoring is really our most important asset. Residents and fellows are taught by renowned educators in anesthesia, intensive care, and pain management, and are exposed to research that is expanding the boundaries of perioperative medical knowledge. New methods of education, 3D echocardiography, advanced airway management, cutting edge regional techniques, and postoperative cognitive decline are just a few of the research areas our faculty is pursuing.

The program at Mount Sinai provides the foundation and skills to be a superb anesthesiologist, a lifetime learner, and to perform successfully in any practice setting. After your training is completed, you will remain part of our extended family throughout your career. We welcome your interest and inquiries.
