Pain Medicine Fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital

The Pain Medicine Fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital is a one-year training program dedicated to acute and chronic pain management. Accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), our fellowship provides extensive clinical experience across multiple locations, with fellows gaining expertise in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The program emphasizes hands-on procedural training with fluoroscopy-guided interventions, ultrasound-guided injections, and exposure to innovative pain management techniques. Fellows benefit from the largest pain didactic session in the United States, combining our eight fellows with an additional four fellows from Mount Sinai West, creating a robust educational environment. Under the leadership of Program Director, Mourad Shehebar, MD, the program prepares fellows for successful careers in pain medicine through comprehensive clinical training, scholarly projects, and extensive post-fellowship support.

Meet the Director

The fellowship’s clinical rotations are structured around both outpatient and inpatient rotations that provide comprehensive exposure to procedural pain management. Outpatient experiences span multiple locations including our Pain Management and Integrative Medicine private practice, the Pain Management and Wellness office, and our ambulatory surgery center, each equipped with fluoroscopy capabilities. Fellows participate in more than 8,000 fluoroscopy-guided procedures annually, along with numerous ultrasound-guided injections, providing exceptional volume and diversity in interventional pain management techniques.

Inpatient rotations (roughly five weeks per year) are divided into acute and chronic pain services, with fellows managing patients on both services. During the acute pain rotation, fellows focus on thoracic and major abdominal cases, while placing and managing thoracic epidurals. The chronic pain service focuses on consultation management and coordination with palliative care and specialized teams such as the Sickle Cell Team. Fellows also complete their required ACGME rotations in headache medicine within neurology, addiction psychiatry, palliative care, and anesthesia (if non-anesthesia trained).

The Pain Medicine Fellowship curriculum centers around three major didactic components that provide theoretical and practical knowledge in pain medicine.

Our pain medicine grand rounds occur weekly and represent the largest pain fellowship educational conference in the United States, featuring core lectures by faculty, fellow presentations, and expert guest speakers. Additionally, our fellows attend weekly Anesthesiology Grand Rounds, a valuable experience for board preparation and maintaining anesthesia knowledge and "Case Conference Hour" sessions, which provide protected time for case discussions, imaging review, and informal education with attending faculty. Our fellows also receive dedicated lectures on medical billing and guided contract review sessions to help prepare for successful transitions into independent practice.

Throughout the year, fellows participate in journal club discussions that complement the lecture series. Each fellow presents a Pain Grand Rounds presentation during their training year, working closely with faculty mentors.

Research and scholarly activity are mandatory components of the fellowship. Each fellow completes a project of publishable or presentable quality prior to graduation. Fellows can choose from various research formats including experimental studies, case reports, poster presentations, or literature reviews, working closely with a faculty mentor of their choice. At Mount Sinai, we provide departmental support for research activities and offer opportunities for presentation at major conferences and regional meetings. We actively encourage conference submissions and provide funding support for fellows who present their research at national meetings.

We accept applications for the Pain Medicine Fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) annually between December and May. Interviews are conducted in July and August. We abide by the rules of the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) for final selection of trainees. Our NRMP number is 1490530F0. Candidates must submit:

  • A completed ERAS application
  • A personal statement
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • United States Medical Licensing Exam transcripts
