Mark G. Lebwohl, MD, leads one of the most renowned dermatology programs in the nation. Under his direction, extraordinary recruits in medical dermatology have developed safer, more effective therapies in skin cancer, psoriasis, vitiligo, eczema, and many other dermatologic diseases.
Mount Sinai's Department of Dermatology offered one of the first fellowships in procedural dermatology, has the best recognized cosmetic dermatology program in the nation, and has one of the nation's most productive dermatopathology divisions. Fellows from around the world seek out Mount Sinai for training in dermatology.
Dr. Lebwohl's main areas of clinical interest include skin cancer and psoriasis. One of the first topical therapies approved for skin cancer and for precancerous lesions was identified by Dr. Lebwohl, and many of the systemic and topical therapies for psoriasis were studied or developed in Mount Sinai's Department of Dermatology.
Dr. Lebwohl earned presidential citations in 2002 and 2006 from the American Academy of Dermatology, recognizing his exceptional leadership and vision. In 2003, his department colleagues chose him as Man of the Year. In 2009, Dr. Lebwohl earned further distinction when Medical Economics magazine named his department a clinical center of excellence — one of just eight institutions in the country so designated. Dr. Lebwohl is frequently an invited guest speaker at universities, medical centers, and professional meetings worldwide.
An accomplished writer and prolific contributor, Dr. Lebwohl has authored or co-authored more than 500 publications and written or edited several books, including the first atlas devoted entirely to cutaneous manifestations of systemic disease, and the leading book on dermatologic therapy, Treatment of Skin Disease. The second edition of The Skin and Systemic Disease has been published in English and in French, and Treatment of Skin Disease has been published in English, Polish, and Portuguese. He is on the editorial boards of many dermatology journals and was the founding editor of the “Medical Pearl” section of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. Dr. Lebwohl is also the founding editor of Psoriasis Forum and medical editor of Psoriasis Advance, the patient bulletin of the National Psoriasis Foundation.
Dr. Lebwohl has led the New York State Society of Dermatology, the Manhattan Dermatologic Society, and the Dermatology Section of the New York Academy of Medicine. He has also chaired the Psoriasis Task Force of the American Academy of Dermatology and is Chair of the Medical Board of the National Psoriasis Foundation. He has been elected to the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Dermatology.
After earning his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, Dr. Lebwohl came to Mount Sinai to complete residencies in both internal medicine and dermatology. He joined the Mount Sinai faculty in 1983 as an assistant professor. He was named Chair of the Department of Dermatology in 1997.
