I am delighted to welcome you to the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, the first of its kind at a Manhattan academic medical center. Founded in 2012, our team is dedicated to education, research, and patient care that is targeted to the concerns of medically underserved communities, focused on eliminating health disparities, and grounded in the time-honored principles of family medicine.
After decades of concern for the deep and worsening U.S. health care crisis, precipitated in part by a shortage of primary care physicians, the department aims to catalyze innovation and service in the field of family medicine. We believe in high-quality, affordable health care for all; culturally sensitive service provision to people of all ages; and bringing the benefits of health information technology to historically disadvantaged communities. Our practice is evidence-based and informed by a spirit of equity and accountability to the communities we serve. Our faculty is extraordinarily dedicated, universally talented, and incredibly diverse.
Our family medicine residency programs are central to the Department’s mission. All three of our residency programs are based at our federally qualified health center sites, with strong hospital partnerships for inpatient training. A wide range of community partners also provide experiences for residents in addressing social determinants of health, advancing public policy, and developing leadership skills. We’re delighted to be able to offer this training experience to the next generation of family physicians.
As we expand our research and training opportunities, we’ll focus on broad collaboration with our colleagues at Mount Sinai, community leaders, and residents of the neighborhoods we serve. We hope you’ll join us as we work to advance the practice of family medicine to improve health in New York City and the Mid-Hudson Valley.
