Integrated Geriatric Fellowship for Physicians, Dentists and Psychiatrists
In 2010 the US Health Services Resources Administration funded our innovative integrated 2-year Geriatric Fellowship for Physicians, Dentists and Psychiatrists to train physicians and dentists who are committed to serving as geriatric faculty in underserved areas. The fellowship uses principles of inter-professional education and is based on the geriatric competencies developed for each discipline. It provides courses and service rotations in a variety of care sites, emphasizing the principles of primary care. A series of core and optional courses are individualized for each fellow, taking into consideration her/his career goals and current level of expertise. As a component of this work, we will be working with the American Board of Internal Medicine to train faculty and develop tools to assess geriatric competence.
